This 2015 photo portrays Chirlane McCray, one of the women who was involved in the Combahee River Women’s Collective, a lesbian commune that existed in the 1970s.

Many lesbians also established lesbian separatist collective family homes, the first of which was called the Furies (1971-1973), after the Greek goddesses of vengeance. There, Rita Mae Brown, Charlotte Bunch, Joan Biren, and others sought to create a haven away from negative patriarchal influences. Another collective was the Combahee River Collective (1974-1980), whose members, including Barbara Smith, Eleanor Johnson, Chirlane McCray, and Audre Lorde, became the most famous originators of black lesbian feminism. Black lesbian feminism is geared toward assisting black lesbians and helping others understand the social needs of black lesbians.
